Hello Folks:
The ’08 election has officially kicked off--& it’s not even spring ’07 yet! As of the middle of last week, thanks to David Geffen in the face of political columnist Maureen Dowd, Hollywood has taken its “rightful” place in the fray.
Heard of the fight revving up now between Obama & Hillary? It’s a fire fueled by Hollywood . . . Hollywood & Politics at its loudest. In Dowd’s New York Times column for 2/21, she reported on a few “caustic comments” from producer, record mogul, & philanthropist David Geffen, in which he slammed his former best-est buds, Hillary & Bill. Geffen pumped a lot of money into Bill’s presidential campaigns, but he’s not gonna feed Hillary’s political machine. Instead, he’s jumped on the Obama bandwagon.
Not only is Geffen's money once again going to political interests, he’s saying things that prove that what comes out of Tinseltown in relation to politics gets heard. Geffen hosted an “opulent Beverly Hills event” as an Obama fundraiser. Geffen’s most incendiary comment:
"Everybody in politics lies, but they [the Clintons] do it with such ease, it’s troubling,” Geffen had said.

1). Should Hollywood have this prominent a role in the direction of a political campaign?
2). What about money & Tinseltown’s star power allows celebrities to help steer the direction of the ultimate battle for the presidency?
3). What are the pros & cons of personalities using their star power to influence public opinion?
Let’s talk . . . opinions, thoughts, commentary?

Oback came out strong in Hollywood! I think it knocked Hillary off her feet...for a while.
I watched Obama and Hillary's speeches at Selma, Alabama at churches 3 blocks apart. They both spoke eloquently and ended up joining hands (along with Bill Clinton) to cross the bridge afterwards. I wonder what this unification means in terms of who will ultimately be elected? Can you imagine a Female President with a Muslim Veep? Lol!
Maureen Dowd used to be one of my favorite columnists, but I am finding her to be a bit too cynical for my taste lately. What do you think?

Thx for posting. I was wondering much the same thing yesterday, thinking of the Hillary/Obama thing -- what if, what if, what if . . . if they joined forces? Really, to think about it . . . on the Democratic side, we have Hillary, we have Obama, & we have Mitt Romney, & I know we have a whole host of others but those 3 put all the stereotypes on the line -- a woman, a black, & a Mormon!
What if the Democrats had to choose among those 3? Who'd win the nomination? An interesting question, really. All 3 are camera-savvy, classy, polished & ready for their "Action!" shots.
Maureen Dowd is getting cynical these days. Politics does that, though. Some of the commentary coming out of our "newscasters" is so much opinion & little else. Makes me believe the Hollywood influence has made its mark possibly more than we realize!

I get these feelings about people and I have seldom been wrong. My husband, who is a very arrogant and is ruled almost completely by intellect, will listen to me: "Okay, what do you think of him?" "Avoid. He isn't what he seems." "You can trust him. He tries to hide the real man, but he's honest and upright." I've been called a "face reader."
Time and time again, Mark has thanked me because I have always been right.
I don't like her. I just plain don't trust or like her.

Christina Daly | | Debra, who do you trust in the political race this year ;)?
I agree that many of us have a 'sense' without connecting it to the analytic process and often it turns out to be right on target. I tend to do this a lot, particularly when I was raising my son. Often, however, I find that there is something about that person which strikes an ancient chord with me and find that I can be wrong.
What I like about Hillary is that she's smart and savvy. I don't think I trust any politician but I do trust her capability. At this point, my 'sense' is telling me that Barak Obama is the one to watch. He seems sincere and fairly untouched by political bitterness or special interests. Time will tell, but I would feel comfortable with Hillary Clinton as the President of the United States.

Debra Shiveley Welch | | I find that I am wrong sometimes too, but I don't think I am with her. Time will ultimately tell. Put it this way, if she becomes President, I won't slit my wrists, but I sincerely feel that she is not "heroic" enough to deserve the honor of being our nation's first female president.
Now, Obama...I like him! I like him a lot! I could be wrong about him too; I haven't been able to see a lot of him, but he sends such pure vibrations.
He reminds me of Pope John Paul II, which I know sounds weird. But he has had the same kind of exposure to many cultures, living conditions (including his own), peoples, etc. I would love to see him as our first black President! Now I believe that HE is "heroic" enough for the honor.

Interesting discussion. Years ago, when ol' Bill was in the running his 1st go-round, I did a lot of interviewing & public work. I got involved w/my 1st political campaign . . . his. I admit--I voted for him. There was something so engaging about him. Yep, I know, that ultimately proved to be TOO true. ; >
I met a woman in the DC area who was a close friend of the Clintons. They all, in a large group, went to a certain secret place every New Year's for about a week & planned out the next year -- not just for them, but for society, in gen'l. It's methodical & brilliant in its determination.
This group has since been called many things in the press, but the concept of it is that the group, including some of the most prominent & influential names in the world, literally formulates specific events to occur in the following year. This isn't so unrealistic because these people are THAT influential--newspapers magnates, political figures, the richest bank accounts, etc. These people shape our world, anywho, so that they INTENTIONALLY meet to do that shaping makes some sense.
I worked on a child abuse project during this period which Hillary supported. She was fierce in her protection of children--& genuine, very genuine. I received a personal thank you, not a real big deal, but it was just another indicator that, above all else, children's issues were at the forefront of her personal scope. She truly cared.
I've since come to see her as an extraordinarily strong woman but I think the political machine has gotten the better of her. I believe she was promised a place in the grand political scheme if she "stood by her man" when the Bill escapade was in full swing. I think the PARTY did this . . . & w/the knowledge of the group of influentials behind her, that's not a crazy supposition.
I can't these days feel comfy in supporting her. I admire her for who she is, for some of what she stands for &, frankly, for how she gracefully put up w/what no woman should have to put up with. She's absotively MORE than capable of handling the office of President of the United States. Yet her ethics may be questionable. Bill's a smart man, but SHE's the brain behind that 2-person Clinton operation . . . & she's proved her mettle thru the fire of public life. She possesses a cold calculation that he could never touch. The ethics questions of what she may have been involved w/over the years would not surprise me if they prove to be true (& some say they've already proven to be true).
